TI Bangladesh Report highlighting Corruption in Climate Mitigation Projects
Corruption Type
Bribery, Conflict of Interest, Collusion
A 2020 report published by Transparency International Bangladesh shows that over half of the funds meant for measures to mitigate climate change were lost to irregularities corruption. Between 2018 and 2020, the equivalent of around US$ 8 million were embezzled from projects aimed at reforestation and renewable energy development. The report highlighted accusations of projects being approved upon political recommendations and bribes, with a ministerial assistant allegedly soliciting a bribe of 10% of the project budget for three different projects. TI Bangladesh also found indications of corruption and favouritism leading to inefficient and wasteful projects with doubtful environmental benefit.
