Condemnation of harassment against anti-corruption campaigner in Mozambique
Transparency International condemns the intimidation and harassment of Edson Cortez, Executive Director of Centro de Integridade Publica (TI Mozambique), and his family. Any threats of violence against civil society representatives are completely unacceptable and demand the full attention of the authorities. Centro de Integridade Publica has been the official national chapter of Transparency International in Mozambique since 2012.
Patricia Moreira, Managing Director of Transparency International, said: “We are shocked and outraged by the threats and harassment directed towards Edson Cortez and his family yesterday. Edson is a highly respected member of the Transparency International movement. The authorities in Mozambique must act swiftly to hold those responsible to account for their actions, which include theft and threats with deadly weapons. We remind Mozambique of its obligations to ensure civil society participation in the fight against corruption under Article 13 the United Nations Convention against Corruption. This includes creating and protecting a safe environment for individuals campaigning for a fairer society.”
