Runaway Bay Declaration: Towards curbing corruption in the Americas
We, Transparency International’s twenty National Chapters and Contacts in the Americas in cooperation with the Americas Department at the Secretariat represented by 35 participants at the 2012 Americas Regional Meeting in Runaway Bay, Jamaica, commit to maximise our efforts and focus regional action to curb corruption together with citizens and relevant actors and networks by working towards:
- Right to know: All citizens in the Americas need to be able to exercise their right to Access to Information by 2015
- Ending impunity: Effective mechanisms protecting and enabling people to speak out against and stand up to corruption need to be in place in all countries in the region to help put an end to impunity,
- Tackling inequality: Plans and actions to reduce poverty and inequality, including social programmes, in the Americas must incorporate transparency as a central element of design and execution, and as a measure of accountability and inclusion of its beneficiaries, so that money goes where it is needed most
- Citizen security: Regional and national strategies and institutions for improving citizen security need to identify and take the transparency and corruption angles into account in order to increase the prospects of being more effective
- Joining forces: Particular attention needs to be given to support major initiatives like the Open Government Partnership, the Organization of American States processes, and the like, that encourage governments and institutions to be transparent, accountable and responsive to their citizens.
