November 2007

Elections held in Latin America during 2007 – most recently in Guatemala, Argentina and Colombia - saw rays of light, but also dark clouds over the evolvement of democracy in the region. As a starting point, we can celebrate that subjecting the government to regular approval through elections today is a given in Latin America.

21 November 2007 marks the ten-year anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions by member states of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Transparency International (TI) holds its Annual Members Meeting (AMM) from 25-29 October in Bali, Indonesia, bringing together more than 200 delegates from over 90 national chapters around the world to exchange information, opinions and experience.

Education is central to preventing corruption. Transparency International believes that if the fight against corruption is to be successful, youth must grow up believing that their talent, effort and merit count more than favouritism, manipulation and bribery.

The 2007 Corruption Perceptions Index looks at perceptions of public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories - the greatest country coverage of any CPI to date – and is a composite index that draws on 14 expert opinion surveys. It scores countries on a scale from zero to ten, with zero indicating high levels of perceived corruption and ten indicating low levels of perceived corruption.

Transparency International (TI) published nine detailed country studies that analyse the implementation of anti-corruption laws in Algeria, Burundi, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Togo, and Uganda.

The National Integrity Systems Overview Report in East and Southeast Asia investigates the strengths of institutions of oversight and accountability as well as regional trends and best practice in nine countries: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Revenues from natural resources – especially oil and gas, or the ‘extractive industries’ – are an important source of income for the governments of more than 50 developing countries. Transparency International’s (TI) Promoting Revenue Transparency Project is one of a number of civil society initiatives aiming to increase transparency in extractive industry revenue flows.

Since 2002 Transparency International (TI) has taken an active approach in Central America. Fighting corruption has been one of the major challenges in this region, as it is a key task aiming at strengthening citizens trust in democratic institutions, foster social and economic development, provide disaster assistance, and promote trade.The New TI website to monitor progress of Central American leaders on anti-corruption promises.
