Projects & activities: What is TI doing to promote anti-corruption conventions and instruments?

The activities described in this section are a sample of TI´s work on international conventions in recent years and into the present. They include awareness-raising, advocacy, analysis and monitoring work.

Examples of TI's awareness-raising and advocacy work are:

  • national, regional and international workshops to inform about conventions and promote their ratification and implementation
  • advocacy guides to provide useful advice to people on how to understand and use anti-corruption conventions
  • website information and other awareness-raising activities such as newspaper articles, radio programmes, newsletters on conventions

TI's convention-related analysis and monitoring work includes:

  • country assessments to provide a basis for promoting convention implementation
  • submission of country reports to intergovernmental review processes and work to develop or improve those processes

TI chapters in all regions have given high priority to promoting the signature and ratification of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). They are also planning a campaign for an effective UNCAC monitoring process. The national chapters in the industrialised countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) are also promoting enforcement of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention, and contributing to monitoring its enforcement. The signatory countries are in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

There is also conventions work in progress on a purely regional basis. In Africa, TI chapters are actively advocating ratification and implementation of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption. In the Americas, they are promoting and contributing to monitoring the implementation of the Anti-Corruption Convention of the Organization of American States (OAS). In Europe, TI chapters regularly contribute to the Council of Europe (GRECO) process for monitoring the Council of Europe Conventions and other instruments.
